This painting was inspired purely by the colours on my palette; it grew slowly over a few weeks while I was painting other things. I kept it in front of me as I worked, and every time I mixed a hue that would work on it I would add to the painting, often having to refine the colour as I went. The group of three colours on the left, as well as the spooted rectangle at right, anchored to the edge of the painting by two horizontal bars, remind me of traffic signals. This painting has a touch of 1950s New York abstraction about it - a very influential period for me.
The paint is quite thick and the brushwork visible - I love the texture and shine of oil paint, and often use thin and thick paint which gives the work extra interest.
