Standing Stones
Oil on Board
2026
35 x 35.5
This fairly small square piece is another in a series of paintings in this warm orange and green palette, this one with the addition of a contrasting blue. The colours are those of nature, cool in places, fiery in others, like the evening sky.
The central blue shape came about because it fitted into the arches, and needed a similar oval below it, this one painted in a more representational manner, more like an actual stone.
I live in Wiltshire, a few minutes from Avebury, the world's largest prehistoric stone circle, and not far from Stonehenge. The surrounding countryside is littered with dolmens, dykes, barrows, standing stones and similar reminders of the ancient inhabitants of this beautiful county.
One side of the board is curved, with a rough edge left by the saw. The paint follows the edge in a natural way, and it seems appropriate to the subject as well as the handling to keep this raw edge.
The painting is currently unframed.Contact us for framing options.
